Brand Focus: Vintage Persol Glasses & Sunglasses

Authentic vintage Persol glasses and sunglasses handcrafted in Italy

Few eyewear brands can match the heritage, craftsmanship and enduring appeal of Persol. Founded in Italy over a century ago, Persol has become synonymous with timeless design, exceptional comfort and meticulous manufacturing quality.

From racing drivers and pilots to Hollywood icons and modern-day collectors, Persol has earned a reputation as one of the world's most respected eyewear brands. While the company continues to produce premium eyewear today, many enthusiasts believe the golden age of Persol lies in its vintage frames, particularly those produced during the celebrated Persol Ratti era.

At Retro Spectacle, we specialise in authentic vintage eyewear and regularly source original Persol glasses and sunglasses from the 1960s through to the 1990s. Whether you are searching for a rare collector's piece, a distinctive pair of sunglasses or a vintage frame for prescription lenses, Persol remains one of our favourite Italian eyewear brands.

The History of Persol

Persol was founded in Turin, Italy, in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti, a photographer and optician who recognised the need for high-quality protective eyewear for pilots and sportsmen.

The name Persol comes from the Italian phrase per il sole, meaning "for the sun".

Unlike many eyewear brands that later expanded into eyewear, Persol began as a specialist eyewear manufacturer. Its focus was always on creating frames that combined comfort, functionality and style.

Throughout the twentieth century, Persol built a loyal following thanks to its innovative designs and commitment to quality. Today, the brand remains a symbol of Italian craftsmanship, with vintage Persol frames particularly prized by collectors and eyewear enthusiasts around the world.

Persol Ratti: The Golden Era

For many collectors, the words "Persol Ratti" represent the pinnacle of vintage eyewear manufacturing.

Produced under the stewardship of the Ratti family in Italy, Persol Ratti frames are renowned for their exceptional build quality, distinctive styling and attention to detail. Many of the most sought-after Persol models originate from this period.

Vintage Persol Ratti frames were manufactured using premium materials and traditional techniques that prioritised durability and craftsmanship. The result was eyewear designed not only to look exceptional but also to last for decades.

Today, original Persol Ratti glasses and sunglasses have become increasingly collectable, particularly examples in excellent condition or new old stock.

What Makes Persol Different?

Meflecto Flexible Temples

One of Persol's most famous innovations is the Meflecto system.

Introduced in the 1930s, Meflecto temples feature a flexible metal core that allows the sides of the frame to adapt to the wearer's head shape. This reduces pressure points and creates a more personalised fit.

The Supreme Arrow

Another instantly recognisable Persol detail is the iconic silver arrow that adorns the temples.

Originally introduced as a functional hinge component, the arrow has become one of the most distinctive design signatures in luxury eyewear, synonymous with the Persol brand.

Made in Turin, Italy

Many vintage Persol frames were handcrafted in Turin using traditional manufacturing techniques and carefully selected materials.

From hand-finished acetate frames to precision-engineered metal designs, vintage Persol eyewear reflects a level of craftsmanship that continues to attract collectors and enthusiasts more than a century after the brand was founded.

Persol and Mod Style

Although Persol was originally developed as functional eyewear, its clean lines, understated luxury and exceptional quality made it a natural fit for Mod culture

Unlike louder fashion brands, Persol offered sophistication without excessive branding. This combination of style and substance helped make the brand popular among those seeking timeless eyewear with genuine character.

Many vintage Persol frames remain favourites among Mod enthusiasts today, particularly styles that combine classic Italian design with distinctive detail.

Persol and Steve McQueen

While Persol has long been associated with Italian style and craftsmanship, the brand's global reputation was cemented by its connection to Steve McQueen.

Often referred to as the "King of Cool", McQueen was frequently photographed wearing Persol sunglasses both on and off screen. His association with the brand helped introduce Persol to a wider audience and remains an important part of the company's heritage today.

Although the folding Persol 714 became his most famous model, collectors often seek out other vintage Persol sunglasses and Persol Ratti frames that capture the same understated sophistication and timeless style.

More than fifty years later, Steve McQueen's influence continues to inspire eyewear enthusiasts and collectors around the world.

Are Vintage Persol Frames Worth Buying?

In our opinion, absolutely!

Vintage Persol frames offer a combination of craftsmanship, comfort and individuality that is increasingly difficult to find in modern eyewear.

Many vintage models were produced in smaller quantities than contemporary frames and feature design details rarely seen today. Combined with Persol's reputation for engineering and durability, this makes vintage examples highly desirable for both collectors and everyday wearers.

Why We Love Vintage Persol at Retro Spectacle

As specialists in vintage eyewear, we have handled thousands of frames from brands across Europe, America and Japan. Yet Persol remains one of the brands we are consistently drawn back to.

Part of that appeal is the quality. Vintage Persol frames feel reassuringly well-made, with excellent materials, thoughtful engineering and a level of craftsmanship that reflects the brand's Italian heritage.

As a qualified Dispensing Optician, I am particularly impressed by Persol's focus on comfort. Features such as the Meflecto flexible temples were genuinely innovative and remain effective today, helping many vintage Persol frames provide a comfortable and secure fit decades after they were first manufactured.

We also admire the timeless nature of Persol's designs. Models such as the Persol Dilke demonstrate this perfectly, combining strong character and distinctive styling with everyday wearability.

Many customers come to us looking for something different from modern mass-produced eyewear. What often surprises them is how relevant vintage Persol frames still feel. They offer individuality without relying on large logos or fleeting fashion trends.

For collectors, Persol offers a fascinating blend of Italian craftsmanship, technical innovation and heritage. For everyday wearers, it offers comfort, durability and timeless style. It is this combination that continues to make Persol one of our favourite vintage eyewear brands.
